The Digital vs. Print Color Dilemma

One of the most frequently asked questions we get are about the colors and formats of files. Specifically, the file type easiest to work with and what color profile the file should contain. Our recommendation is: High Resolution PDF with 1/8th inch bleed on each side in CMYK format. However,  even when all the correct steps are taken, there is a chance that the colors on the screen will not match the ones being printed. This is because of the way that colors are created on a screen and on print. It is also why at Kendall Press, we always print out samples for our customers before printing out large batches of product. In this article, we will talk about how to decrease the variation between digital and print as much as possible, and the reasons behind the variations. Why do files look different on screen from when they are printed?

RGB vs. CMYK

Let’s start with some basics. Many people know about the two major color formats: CMYK and RGB. RGB simply stands for Red, Green and Blue, while CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. The two methods however, differ in more than just which colors are used as the base, but also how they are used to create new colors. Specifically, the RGB color wheel is additive and used widely in electronic displays; it uses light and adds RGB values to create different colors. CMYK is subtractive; it creates different colors by removing different CMYK values. This becomes easier to understand when you consider that in CMYK, light is being reflected while in RGB, the light is being created.  If you look at the pictures sampled below, RGB is used in screens to produce colors. This color creator is from Microsoft Word. When creating the color white, notice how RGB all have full output (255).

RGB white

When producing the color black, the screen simply produces 0 colors.RGB black

Comparing that to CMYK; white is the base value with 0,0,0,0, and  CMYK values are added to reflect different colors. Interestingly, in CMYK, there are multiple black colors. One, obviously being just 0,0,0,100. Another, is the black that is created from simply converting RGB black into CMYK (this ends up being 75,68,67,90 in CMYK).

What Does this Mean to Me?

This means that even when switching color formats on your screen, the screen itself can only do its best to imitate what the colors would look like on paper. This has a lot to do with the fact that screens have a back light, while printed material reflects light. There is also the consideration that certain screens have different resolutions and quality which can further impact the difference between what is seen digitally vs. what is printed. A good general rule of thumb to limit this differentiation is to keep your screen brightness at 50%. Avoiding neon, or extremely radiant colors can also help as they generally don’t translate well on paper. However, it is important to note that most of the time, for everyday, personal printing needs, these color changes are unnoticeable. Kendall Press, being a printing company that deals only with excellence, we have to make sure that everything is as close to perfect as possible. This is one of the reasons why we print samples before printing large quantities of product.

The Adobe Suite Color Dilemma

It’s been reported that when opening files that contain Pantone colors, using Adobe, the color values shown can sometimes vary between different Adobe programs. This is because the formula that Adobe Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop uses, can convert Pantone colors into different CMYK values.

Pantone Colors

The problems comes when Adobe Illustrator, In Design, and Photoshop convert Pantone colors into different CMYK values through Adobe’s own formulas. However, Pantone is the international color standard. this means that all the standard Pantone colors should have the same values throughout the Adobe Creative Suite program. Because we are not just a printing company but also do design work, among other services, we realized that the colors sometimes come out differently. So we reached out to Pantone, purchased and installed the Pantone Color Manager to standardize colors in our software, thus giving us an edge in making sure that the colors we see on our screens, match as much as possible to the ones that will be printed. Of course there also metallic colors that are printed through a printing press. By nature, these colors are near impossible to represent digitally because of how they reflect light.

Hopefully this information is helpful for you as a lot of it is unknown. The knowledge of the Adobe Suite incorrectly translating Pantone colors is one that is uncommon even within the printing industry! As Always, feel free to provide any questions or feedback below.

Window Clings (aka Static Clings)

Window Clints

Decorate with Window Clings

Kendall Press has been receiving numerous requests recently to print window clings so I thought that would be a good subject to write about. I would like to use this blog to go over a few important details about window clings and how you can use them to promote your business.

What is a Window Cling?

A window cling is clear or white flexible vinyl that can adhere to glass-like surfaces of windows or mirrors. Like their name suggests, they have no adhesive so they adhere to the surface with static, leaving no adhesive residue behind when removed. They are sometimes referred to as static clings.  They can be positioned on the front or the backside of a window, but if you plan on using it externally, then the static type would not be right for this use. They are meant for short term use as they tend to hold their charge for around 6 months. The benefit of using this type of window cling is that they are easily removed and can be repositioned often.

If you are looking to have the window cling up for a longer period of time, then you would request a window cling with a low tack adhesive.  This adhesive can be added to either side, allowing for the vinyl to adhere to either the front or back side of the window.  The low tack window cling material can also be removed and repositioned, but it needs to be done with caution. These window clings are available both in the clear and white vinyl materials as well. Although the low-tack window clings have an adhesive on it, they will not leave a residue when removed.

Both types of window clings are durable and offer a great way to promote your branding.

Shapes and Colors of Window Clings

Window clings are printed in full color so they can easily catch the eye of someone passing by. If you should choose clear vinyl for the cling, then we would first put down a layer of white ink below the image so that the image becomes opaque and no show through appears. Window clings are available in a wide range of sizes and can be cut into squares, circles, ovals or any custom shape that you have, making them unique to your product or business.

Promoting your Business with Window Clings

Window clings are an inexpensive way to get the word out about a special product release or promotion that you are running. The food and beverage industries also use them to pass out to their customers to help promote their products in the retail stores where they are sold. Larger window clings can be used for temporary signage or help to make the office festive around the Holidays. Have you used window clings in the past? Let us know what creative uses you have found for them.

Kendall Press Direct Mail Postcards

Kendall Press Direct Mail Postcards

Why not try direct mail postcards?

Direct mail postcards are an easy way to showcase your product or services.  They can be designed in a variety of sizes to ensure that they get noticed in the mail.  You can control the timing of when you want them to reach your customers.  If you don’t have a mailing list, we can help with that.  Just tell us what type of customers you are trying to target, business, residential or both.  The geographic area that you would like to target, the demographics of the people, including possibly age, male or female, income level, etc.  The more that you narrow down your target market, the better results you will see.

Get Measured Results.

Be sure to include a clear call to action on your printed piece. Tell your audience exactly what you would like them to do. Should they give you a call, send you an email, register for your seminar or download a free whitepaper? By including a direct call to action, you will improve your response rate.

You can measure the results from your postcard campaign by setting up a special tracking phone number that will ring to your main number or by creating a unique domain name or Personalized URL (PURLs) for each mailing.  If you offer a discount, you can put a special code on the postcard that the recipient can use when they order online or have them bring the postcard in when they come to place an order.

Social media and web marketing are right for some markets, but the time tested practices of direct mail still generate substantial results. From creative concepts and eye-catching designs, to expert production, mailing list curation, and efficient, effective distribution, Kendall Press can manage your direct mail project every step of the way. Whatever the goal, we’ll help you get the word out and succeed.  If you would like to give direct mail a try, visit our website or give us a call and we will work with you to create a winning direct mail campaign.

2.    Selection.

By using your local print shop for your next project, you will find a wide selection of paper, ink colors, and finishing techniques available to you. Just choosing the right paper for your project can be daunting. You will need to consider the surface of the paper which will affect the look, feel and printability of your project. The shade of paper is also important – who knew there could be so many shades of “white”? The brightness of the paper affects the readability of the printed piece. The opacity is important if you are printing double sided and do not want show through. If your piece is going to be folded, then the grain of the paper needs to be going in the right direction so no cracking occurs. And, based upon how you plan to use the printed piece and how long you want it to last, the weight of the paper is also very important. Your local print shop works with many different papers every day and can help you make all the tough decisions. You can stop in and we will be happy to show you samples and let you touch and feel the different papers available for your project. The presentation of your printed piece is important as you want to make sure it sends the right message to your customer. Promotional Products – a Marketing Powerhouse

Promotional Products

Promotional Products

As the kids go back to school and we say goodbye to the lazy days of summer, our thoughts turn back to business. Promotional Products are a great way to remind your customers that you are here for them and provide an excellent return on your marketing investment. Here are some reasons to use Promotional Products in your Marketing Program.

Promotional Products increase brand awareness.

Whether you are just starting your business or have been in business for a long time, it is important to promote your brand. People respond to repeated exposure. Think back to all the commercial jingles that we have heard over the years, I bet you can name many of the products by the slogans that were played over and over again. Our eyes work in the same way. When we see the same thing over and over again, we are more likely to remember it. A carefully chosen promotional item in front of your customer on a daily basis will remind them of you when they need your services!

Promotional Products can be used to open lines of communication.

What better way to introduce your company’s products to potentially new customers than by giving them a gift. It opens the door and gives you the opportunity to get to know them, find out what their needs are and to discuss your products and services. They help create that very important favorable first impression! Giving of Promotional Products improves the recipient’s feelings towards your brand and helps them remember you when the need for your product arises.

Promotional Products can be used as part of a direct mail campaign.

Studies show that adding a Promotional Product to a direct mailing improves the response rates over a letter alone. Get creative. Recently, Kendall Press included a package of herb seeds in our capability brochure mailing as part of our Grow your Business with Kendall Press Campaign. If you haven’t received your seed pack and would like one, just let us know and we will be happy to send you one!

Kendall Press Herb Seed Packs

Promotional Products can be used to show appreciation.

Let’s face it; competition can be tough in the business world. We need to find ways to let our current customers know that we appreciate their business. Branded products are an inexpensive way to say thank you to your current customers or to show appreciation to your staff for a job well done. As with any gift that you give, you need to think about the recipient – gender, age, occupation, etc. All of these factors will help you pick the correct product. Try and choose a something that will be useful and helpful to them on a daily basis.

Here at Kendall Press, we understand that choosing the right promotional products can be difficult, but it is far easier when you have the right professionals on your team, helping you make the right choice. Let the Kendall Press team help you reach new customers and make your next event a success!

What are the benefits of using floor graphics?

With floor graphics, you can be original and artistic while showcasing your brand. They are an inexpensive way to generate interest in a new product, or use as a teaser for an upcoming event. This material is repositionable with no adhesive residue, slip resistant, dimensionally stable and durable. Where are people looking these days? With the advent of the smart phone and social media, most people are walking around looking down at their phones. What better place to grab attention than with floor graphics? You have paid for the floor space; why not use it to your advantage?

Applications for using floor graphics

One of the most popular ways to use floor graphics is at trade shows. They are simple to install and can be easily removed at the end of the show. You can display your brand and spark discussions about all your latest products.

There are many other creative ways to use floor graphics. If you are decorating a new office or renovating an existing one – floor graphics are great for displaying your logo in the entry way, communicating messages and directing visitors. They can be used to announce short pop-up product launches, as a special welcome for your most important clients or to acknowledge your sponsors at a special event. In a warehouse or around a construction site, they can help keep materials organized. Outdoors, they can be used to lead runners to the finish line. They are a great solution for any event like concerts or festivals.

How have you used floor graphics in the past? We would love to hear from you. Have a special event coming up; let Kendall Press help you build your brand from the floor up!

Awesome product of the week!

Check out these pop-up banner stands about to ship with Kendall Press’s custom printed tape sealing the edges!

At first, it may seem like an added expense, but if used properly, it can help your business grow. Custom printed tape does the advertising for you, eliminating the need to have a variety of costly printed boxes sitting on your shelves. Printed tape is perfect to highlight your company logo or products from the time you ship your package, until it gets to your customers hands. It lets your customer know that you are proud to put your name on your product and creates a good first impression. Remember, whether your product is shipping long distance or just going to the building next door, your package will pass through many hands presenting the opportunity to attract new customers.

Reasons to use custom printed tape.

Of course, one of the main reasons to use printed tape is marketing. You can use it to convey special messages or announce new products. Design is important. Make sure your brand stands out and that your logo will be clearly visible from a distance. You can have one color, two color or three color printing and it comes in 2” and 3” widths.

Other common uses would be to identify packages with special handling needs such as fragile, heavy, handle with care, etc. This type of tape will let the handler’s know the best way to transport your package so it gets to where it needs to be safely. Printed tape cannot be broken without detection so it can alert you if the package has been tampered with. It also makes tracking your packages easier. Have you ever seen the number of boxes that ship to convention centers or hotels? Identifying your boxes with custom printed tape will aid in keeping all of your packages together, helping to ensure they get to you when you need them!

Constructions companies use tape for a variety of different reasons, but mostly to section off areas to keep people out of danger. It helps to promote their company while they are working.

These are just a few reasons to use custom printed tape. We would love to hear what applications you have used custom printed tape for. Please feel free to share your ideas or give us a call to discuss new ideas!

Hassle-free mailings – we can help!

Did you know that when your printed project is finished, Kendall Press can also manage your mailing services too? In this busy world, why not let us help save you time, energy and money! We will work with you to make sure that you will receive the lowest postage rate and the best possible delivery times on your mailings.

In this blog, I would like to give you an overview of our services and explain how we can help you reach your target audience thus giving you the greatest return on your mailing.

The Oh-So Important Address List

Why is the address list so important to your mailing? You have gone through a lot of time and expense to create a mail piece that is attractive and effective. Now let’s get it into your customer’s hands. If it is not addressed properly, it will result in returned mail, wasted postage, and possibly loss of business. In order to get you the best postage rates, we need to start with a properly formatted mailing list. When creating your database, remember that the first row in your spreadsheet should contain the headers for your data. For example, the headers for a typical mailing might be: Name, Address 1, Address 2, City, State and Postal Code. If you are planning to personalize a letter, you will want to separate the name column into two fields, First Name, and Last Name. If your printed piece contains variable data, then you will need the appropriately titled columns for the data you will want merged. The column for your zip code will need to be coded as such. To do this, highlight the whole column, right click and select format cells. Scroll down to Special and choose Zip Code or Zip Code + 4 for the type.

Correct formatting for zip codes when doing mailings

CASS Certification and Intelligent Bar Coding

CASS is a United States Postal Service (USPS) acronym for Coding Accuracy Support System.  According to the USPS, over 45 million Americans move every year. That is a huge number and some of them could be your customers. Once we receive your mailing list, we will take the data that you provided and run it through our advanced mail presort technology to determine if there are duplicate records, incomplete addresses or if the addressee has moved from the address provided. This way, we can be sure that the mailing will have a high percentage of delivery success. The list will be CASS Certified which means that the address list has been checked against the USPS Address Matching System and the 11-digit delivery point zip code and corresponding barcode will be added. We will check to make sure that you mail piece meets all the requirements to take advantage of the postal discounts.

Pulling it all together

Whether it is putting a simple, one-page letter in an envelope or a multi-piece marketing kit (letter, several brochures, training CD, reply form, etc.), we can put it all together for you accurately and fast.

Kendall Press has the ability to take your mailing piece from design through delivery to the post office. We specialize in mailing services project management. What’s the buzz?

Kendall Press has been all a buzz with their new HP Latex 360 wide format printer that was recently installed. It’s like getting a shiny new car and trying to learn all the bells and whistles on it. Like anything new, everyone wants to be the first to use it. What will we print on it? Vinyl banners, fabric banners, mesh banners, retractable banners, vehicle wraps, backlit films, wall and floor graphics – shall I go on? The possibilities are truly endless.

HP 360 Latex Wide Format Printer

And, what better way to try it out than with some new signage for Kendall Press?  I have a feeling this printer is going to get it’s work out!

Why is Latex ink important?

Latex Inks produce virtually odorless prints. The water-based inks are nonflammable and noncombustible.  It helps us to exceed client expectations with production speeds ideal for handling urgent jobs.  And the high-quality, durable prints provide scratch resistance comparable to hard-solvent inks.

Banners and the materials they can be printed on

Well-designed banners can help you grab attention at trade shows.  They can be used to thank sponsors for their donations, announce grand openings, used as backdrops for photo shoots, announce new products, etc.

Banners can be printed on vinyl, which can be used both indoors and outdoors and finished in a variety of ways.  They can have pole pockets for using wooden rods to hang them or simply be finished with grommets.  Retractable banners can be printed on Pospro (a durable, light weight material that stays flat when set up).  Retractable banners are great for trade shows and allows for easy setup and transport.  Pop-up banners are printed on fabric and they are finished with Velcro to adhere to their frame.  Mesh vinyl is mostly used for outdoor banners.  The mesh will allow the wind to pass through the banner without the need for wind slits to be cut.  Fabric banners are lightweight, can be folded or rolled and are great if you need to travel to a conference with your poster.

Give us a call – we would love to help you with your wide format printing!
